Art Education
As a recent graduate of the Master of Teaching (MT) program at OISE, I am a dedicated and passionate teacher-researcher with a strong interest in technology and the arts. As part of the MT program, my research has been focused on Indigenous education, specifically exploring conflicts between Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldview. Much like worldview, I believe art is about perspective as there is no one way to understand or experience art. We all have a story, a unique voice, and an individual perspective to share with the world, which in many ways might only be transmitted through the arts. Working with students of all ages, I have gained rich experiences within Canada and abroad, developing and participating in art programs that engage young people and encourage them to explore the many ways art can communicate beyond what words can express. As a graduate of OCAD, I understand the ways art might act as a bridge to not only connect our experiences and share the nature of our own humanity but to also transcend our differences, bridging understanding, and bringing us closer together. I believe the arts can communicate our experiences, express feelings, highlight issues of importance, celebrate culture or religion, but more importantly and maybe most importantly, art gives individuals a voice to express themselves. As such, it is my goal as a teacher-researcher and artist to help young people realize and recognize the power of their voices as creators. To achieve this, I draw from my experiences with photography, sculpture and installation, printmaking, painting and integrated media to construct innovative community building projects that aim to create understanding and develop a connection. It is through a combination of my own experiences, beliefs, and education that have led me to become the educator I am today and that fuel my passion for the arts and for life. In essence, I believe art and creativity not only have the power celebrate our diversity, but art can also empower and inspire new ways of looking at and living in the world.
